- The pharmacokinetics of many drugs are different in children compared to adults. The pharmacokinetic processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion undergo changes due to growth and development. Finding the correct doses for children is complicated by a lack of pharmacokinetic studies. Children’s doses cannot always be extrapolated directly from adult studies. Many paediatric doses are based on the child’s age or weight. These may need adjustment depending on the child and the clinical response. It is important to check dose calculations. The calculated childhood dose should not usually exceed the adult dose.
